Zenonia 3 Review: A Thrilling Action-RPG With a Few Bumps Along the Way

When I set out to review Zenonia 3 on iOS, I wasn’t sure what to expect. All I knew was that it was an action-RPG from Gamevil, a South Korean developer, and I had no prior experience with the series. But given my history of enjoying similar titles, I was eager to dive in with optimism.

What I found was an experience that, while thrilling at times, also felt uneven. Zenonia 3 presents an intriguing blend of basic, action-oriented combat and a surprisingly complex inventory and stat system. The game centers around Chael, a human who finds himself transported to a mysterious land teeming with dubious NPCs and hostile monsters. If there’s one major flaw in Zenonia 3, it’s its meandering and often incoherent story. The narrative falters, with long-winded dialogue and cutscenes that feel more like a chore than a hook. Fortunately, the game lets you skip most of the story beats, allowing you to focus on what’s really enjoyable—gameplay.

The combat in Zenonia 3 is fast-paced and real-time, stepping away from the traditional turn-based RPG mechanics. While the action is generally fun and forgiving, the controls can sometimes feel a little cumbersome on the small screen. It’s clear that the game would benefit from a more tactile setup, like a physical handheld device, as your fingers can easily obscure parts of the screen. Nevertheless, the combat is still functional and enjoyable, thanks to the intuitive virtual buttons and D-pad.

The real depth of Zenonia 3 lies in its expansive quest systems, inventory management, and customization options. For fans of the grind, there’s a lot to love here. Whether you’re working through the main quest or tackling numerous side missions, there’s a solid sense of progression. The inventory system is particularly satisfying, with plenty of weapons, armor, and items to collect and upgrade. The thrill of building up your character and filling your inventory is complemented by the satisfaction of completing both primary and optional quests. There's always something to do in Zenonia 3, which will keep action-RPG enthusiasts engaged for hours.

In the end, Zenonia 3 is a solid title with its fair share of highs and lows. While its combat and progression systems are strong, the weak story and occasional control frustrations hold it back from being a truly standout experience. Still, if you're a fan of action-RPGs, the game offers plenty to enjoy, making it worth the journey despite its imperfections.
